Vestibular Therapy
Vestibular Therapy (VT), also known as vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) is a specialized form of physical therapy that focuses on the vestibular system, a crucial part of the nervous system responsible for maintaining balance and spatial orientation. This system integrates sensory information from the eyes, inner ears, and limbs to help stabilize the body. However, when this sensory input is inaccurate or incomplete, it can result in symptoms such as dizziness, vertigo, and difficulties with balance and walking, which may increase the risk of falls.
Additionally, individuals with vestibular disorders often adopt a sedentary lifestyle in order to avoid exacerbating the symptoms that can be triggered my movement. This inactivity can lead to a decline in muscle strength and flexibility, increased joint stiffness, and diminished stamina, further complicating their overall health and mobility.
The purpose of vestibular therapy is to use targeted exercises to improve the function of the vestibular system to restore good communication between these sources of information and the brain
