What is Diagnostic MSK Ultrasound?

Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS) is an imaging technique which uses sound waves to generates images of soft tissues and bony surfaces. It provides clinicians with a “window” through the skin to examine muscles, tendons, ligament, bones, nerves and fascia.

An ultrasound machine used for medical examinations typically has a display screen and a transducer or probe that sends out high-frequency sound waves beyond the range of human hearing. As these sound waves travel through different types of body tissues, some are reflected back to the transducer while others penetrate further into the body. To generate visual images, the machine uses only the echo signals that return to the probe.
